July 09, 2009On a recent family beach trip my sister-in-law, Amanda, newly committed to the Green movement, surprised my mom, sisters, and I with a great gift -- water bottles! Not just any water bottle, not the desperately in need of hydration, college student's, hippie sticker bedecked, Nalgene, not a dinky 12 pack of Dasani, but a chic-ly re-used Pellegrino bottle.
Her good friend high-school friend Guion Benkin had the vision to save piles of empty bottles from clogging up our landfills. She did her research and found that according to the New York Times, over 90% of negative environmental impact is made creating the plastic bottle -- and that's before you even open the top to drink the water. That's a shocking statistic, but maybe not as shocking that right now plastic outweighs plankton in the sea 6:1.
Motivated by such alarming facts, Guion started the Re-Hy Bottle Company. She collects used bottles and rehabilitates them into eco-chic, customizable water bottles available in a variety of sizes. The one Amanda personalized for me is pictured above. She swears by them and has 4 already! I'm still working on my one, but I'm loving it so far. I think they make great gifts too; perfect for girls trips, bridesmaids, work friends or just a happy little surprise for anyone!

Zoe! I love my Re-Hy bottle. Guion's sister works with me at the Dixon and we all have one here. Great post!
