Summer Showers

You might think an outdoor shower is a luxury reserved only for beach houses, but as long as you have spigot and a little creativity you too can have an outdoor shower. After a hot summer afternoon at the pool, working in the garden, or after a jog, what could be better than to cool off with a quick rinse in an outdoor shower? They are easy to install and you can make them as basic or elaborate as you wish.

You can make the shower screen above with just outdoor fabric (or even a fabric shower curtain to save a little $$) and some basic supplies you can pick up at the home improvement store. For step-by-step instructions and list of supplies click here.

Looking for a little more guidance, watch this how-to video on installation of an outdoor shower by This Old House here.

Once you get the basic shower installed you can customize to fit your home and families' lifestyle.

Create a private oasis with shutter-style doors. Slatted doors are great because they offer privacy but still allow for ventilation. Nothing worse than a musty shower.

No space to construct a shower? Turn a porch or patio corner into a mini bath with a shower rod and curtains. Hang two panels (opposed to just one) for more shower coverage and to get the beachside cabana look.

Once the family is hooked on the outdoor shower, outfit it with all the comforts of the in home bath, Vanity mirror, good-smelling soaps and shampoo, plenty of shelves, also keep an aloe vera gel or lotion to sooth sunburned skin.
