Calling All Design Snobs

Vw-bug

Volkswagen is coming up with a list of 10 designs in 5 categories: design, food, music, TV, and fashion for the ultimate list of the 50 Most Timeless. The hip carmaker has teamed up with the modern British home magazine LivingEtc to compile the top 10 timeless designs for the home. You go to the website and vote for your top 10 -- www.livingetc.co.uk/timeless50. Keep their guidelines for timeless design in mind when you cast your vote: "Great designs transcend the passing of the years and are impervious to fashion -- they offer simplicity and style and are the perfect marriage of form and function. By looking as fresh and modern today as they did when they were conceived, they have a timeless quality."

My Votes -- in no particular order:

Andrew-martin-ice-bucket

There's a glamorous quality that normally escapes ice buckets found in this one. I'm positive that James Bond keeps his ice in one of these.
I also believe that this will work equally well in the home of a twenty something as well as in a well-appointed Manhattan penthouse.

 Anglepoise-desk-lamp
Again, totally timeless. A lamp built for function. So sure of it's ability to light a spreadsheet, this lamp's utilitarian confidence would lend itself well to a console in an entryway

Apple-shuffle
So sleek, so small, and carries tons of music, discreetly. It works just as well for a suburban jogger as for a London commuter.

Bialetti-espresso-maker

Perky, sturdy and, handsome too -- always makes the perfect espresso whether it's for an early morning wake up or for a leisurely after dinner drink. One of the few things in life that leaves no room for improvement.

Btc-titan
To me, this ceiling light exudes the same quite confidence as the anglepoise lamp. Capable enough to light an operating room, but humble enough to hang above a kitchen island.

Ghost-chair
I'm a little biased to this, I've been wanting one for years now. Though I can picture it any place I've ever lived (or plan to), I can't say for certain this one will stand the test of universal and timeless appeal. I'd like to hear what you think. I do think it would add a hit of edgy-chic, cool to a nursery. I'm picturing it with a thick, hand-knit pillow in the seat...thoughts?

Maglite-flashlite

In the debate of Form vs. Function there is rarely a tie. Except here, I think Mag-Lite delivers the best of both worlds here. Yes, it's possible, flashlights can be cool AND dependable. But, it's on you to remember to change the batteries...

Michelangelo-martini
Ever ordered a martini just because it looks good and sounds good? Guilty. I'm sure I'm not alone. From the Rat Pack to James Bond to the foursome of Sex and the City -- the martini recipe itself may have varied, but the drinking vessel remains the same. Timeless? Check.

Newgate-wallclock

If Buddy Holly glasses are geek-chic then this clock epitomizes geek-chic for timekeeping. I'm positive I've watched the time drone along on one of these in Algebra class. It's clean design and clear numbers ensure it will stand the test of time.

Saarinen
Love this table. It could move effortlessly from the dining room to a space shuttle. Something I would definitely invest in now that would work in any space I may have from now til forever.

These are all my opinions. Go let your own design snobbery be heard at http://timeless50.livingetc.com/.
